چکیده

Let’s go back to the basics of DNA. DNA is the blueprint that tells the cell through RNA what proteins to make. It is usually composed of two strands of nucleotides (remember some viruses can be single stranded). A nucleotide is made from nitrogenous bases, purines (adenine & guanine) and pyrimidines (cytosine & thymine). They will pair up according to base pair rules, adenine pairs with thymine and guanine pairs with cytosine. DNA length is measured in base pairs (bp). The DNA of E. coli, for example is 4.6 X 10 bp long. DNA is stored on one or two chromosomes in the bacterial cell in a region of the cell called the nucleoid. DNA is also stored on plasmids, but DNA stored on plasmids is not necessary for cell replication or survival. The genomic sequence (nucleotide pattern) of many microorganisms has already been determined. Prokaryotic organisms are haploid, i.e. they have 1n number of chromosomes. There are three categories of genes that are coded for in the DNA sequence: genes that code for proteins (structural genes), genes that code for RNA, and genes that code for gene expression (regulatory genes).

Determining Difference in Evolutionary Variation of Bacterial RecA proteins vs 16SrRNA Genes by using 16s_Toxonomy Tree

Background and Aims: The rate of variation in various genes of a bacterial species is different during evolution. Therefore, in systematic bacterial studies many researchers compare the phylogenetic tree of a particular gene to the standard tree of an rRNA gene. Regarding the importance of 16SrRNA gene and the evolutional process of RecA protein family, we investigated the changes in the select...

Professor Heinz Saedler: a Lasting Legacy a Dedication to the Earliest and Most Productive Contributor Uncovering Genes in the Maize Genome

This essay is a series of events whereby I cover the 30 years (1964-1994) in a ‘transposon odyssey’ in which I sought to learn more on the molecular investigations of transposons that eventually led to collaboration with Professor Heinz Saedler. Following his stellar career in bacterial genetics, Prof. Saedler embarked in 1980 on a career in plant genetics. Using the tools from bacterial geneti...

Exploring microbial microevolution with microarrays.

Gene arrays are typically employed to monitor gene expression and regulation, but they are finding additional applications in studying patterns of evolution in bacterial genomes. In particular, this approach has been applied to answer questions about the heterogeneity in full gene repertoires among bacterial strains and species without relying on more costly and time-consuming methodologies. In...
